The CPF (Individual Taxpayer Registry) is a Brazilian document that every person living in Brazil needs to have. It's purpose is identifying taxpayers at the Federal Internal Revenue Department and it's a document required for several legal procedures - including renting a house - so it’s extremely important for any foreigner living in Brazil to make one as soon as possible. To make it easier for you, we made a step by step guide, with all the information you need.
1 - You will need to go to one of the places that offers CPF services:
Banco do Brasil
Caixa Econômica Federal
Correios (Mailing places)
2 - Documents you’ll need to request your CPF application:
Passport
Proof of residence in Brazil (energy or water bill, for example)
Declaration from the person you’re living with to prove you are living with them. It needs to be notorized at a Registry Office (Cartório).
PS: If the person who you’re living with, or renting the place of have the time to go with you, then they just need to have an identification document and a proof of residence on their name. In this case, the written declaration is not necessary.
PPS: This might not be requested, depending on the agency.
3 - After filling it, you will have to pay a fee of R$5,70.
4 - With the payment receipt and your passport, go to Receita Federal to get the document. The service at Receita Federal works by a numbered system with queue tickets, where they distribute limited tickets for the people who are going to get the service on that day. To get a note, you have to go there early in the morning, preferably before 8:30 a.m.
5 - When they call your number, show them the payment receipt and your passport, and they’ll print the CPF for you.
